Decrease of new HIV infections in United Kingdom (UK)

In 2015, a total of 6,286 new HIV infections were reported in UK. During 2016, the total number of new infections decreased by 18 %, with a decrease of 21 % among gay and bisexual men. In London the decrease was even more pronounced among gay and bisexual men with a decrease of no less than 29 % compared to “only” 11 % outside of London. This rather dramatic decrease follows many years of steady increase.

Comment: There may be different contributing factors to this positive development. One potential explanation may be the use of generic Truvada for PrEP that began after the results of the PROUD and IPERGAY studies were published in 2014. Increased testing and immediate treatment of all new cases may also have contributed to the sudden and dramatic reductions of new HIV diagnoses. The dramatic decrease in new infections shows that the epidemic can be controlled by applying and combining different prevention strategies.
